Elephant are big talkers, just like we are… only they speak in a language we can’t hear the majority of. These massive pachyderms use low frequency vibrations that only occassionally we hear as a rumble when we stand near them. These vibrations however can travel long distances to far off herds in order to communicate all kinds of information.
In this picture we see another method of communication, this touching of trunks is more a tactile communication and encourages communal bonds between members of herds. Recent stduies have suggested that Elephant use sign lanaguage as well so maybe we have some competition in the advanced language stakes that we didn’t even know about…
